M·A·C x Prabal: A perfect Marriage of Beauty and Fashion
We don’t usually do beauty posts here on Textures, but this one is an exception to the rule! When a glamorous fashion designer like Prabal Gurung collaborates with a well-known cosmetic company like M·A·C, it’s bound to be good, and this one is a perfect marriage.
Prabal’s success comes from humble beginnings. Born in Singapore, he began his design career in New Delhi and moved to New York City in 1999 to complete his studies at Parsons School for Design. After seven years working in the industry, two of which were with Cynthia Rowley’s design and production teams, followed by five years at Bill Blass, he launched his first collection; PRABAL GURUNG.
The collaboration between Garung and M·A·C was a natural progression, since M·A·C has been doing makeup for Prabal’s shows since he launched his own line in 2009. In order for it to work, the designer had one condition; change the packaging. “I wanted it to be an object of desire whether it stays on the bathroom counter, in the cabinet, or when you take it out of your bag on your way from a restaurant to the club and you’re putting on your lipstick,” he told ELLE.com at last weeks M·A·C x Prabal launch at the Standard Hotel in New York City. Inspired by watching his mother put on her makeup everyday, his appreciation for beauty started at a young age. “I felt personally that the getting-ready process, whether it’s 10, 15 minutes or one hour, is such a time for yourself and I wanted to create this moment for this woman that I imagined. When she pulls the makeup out and puts it on the counter, she feels good. There’s an aspiration to it”, he told Fashionista.com. And aspiring it is. With Garung involved creatively well beyond the color palette, the packaging is more than just its case. “I wanted a lipstick that even after it’s gone, woman would keep for the packaging” Garung said in an interview with W magazine.
The 14 products – ranging in hues of natural beiges to dramatic charcoals – including three eye shadow duos, eyeliner, cream blush, highlighter, three shades of lipstick with matching glosses, and a bronzer, are set to be released on November 26th just in time for the holiday season.
“I think whatever we do, beauty, fashion or art should be able to inspire in a big – or small – way,” Garung told NY Daily News. Which just goes to show that this line is much more than just makeup, it’s fashion… it’s art.
