Fashion Tips: A Designer’s Guide to Using Neoprene (Scuba)
Neoprene, often referred to as scuba in the textile world, is an unconventional fabric and a must have to add to your closet this fall! (Or your collection, shout out to our designers!) The influence and reference to surf culture is undeniable with a name like scuba, but this new fabric is taking a step away from the wet suit look and taking on a new approach with styles that are round and baggy. Scuba is going big, loose and sculptural! In addition to being comfortable and functional, Scuba can change a classic look into a fashion forward ensemble!
(From left to right) On the picture-montage above, Guy Laroche uses Scuba in a minimalistic and contemporary way. Laroche mastered an ultra-feminine look using neoprene which gave his collection a total sporty chic look. We love the mix of genres; wearing a kangaroo sweater with a gored circular skirt is totally trendy.
Kenzo’s direction is more young & casual. These versatile looks can either be worn for a chic ladies lunch or to a business meeting. I personally love the black bubble sleeve sweater with the iconic Kenzo eye.
Phillip Lim used a quilted textured scuba and gave a modern twist to the high-tech fabric. The lines are clear and defined for the coat and round for the bloomer short.
Finally Giles played with the flexibility of the material to create oversized and sculptural shapes.
IT girls from around the world are being photographed wearing Balenciaga’s version from his FW13 collection. I’m personally in love with the look of Miroslava Duma at the Giambattista Valli fashion show in Paris. The printed jacket/skirt set is absolutely gorgeous!
Now that we’ve inspired you with our runway favorites, it’s time to unveil our TÉLIO top picks. We have an amazing collection of Scuba; in both prints and solids. Here are some of our fun prints.
Still unsure how to style this fabric?
Let your imagination run wild, and remember, scuba might be fashion forward but it’s also very accessible and can be worn as an everyday outfit like the styles above. It’s the perfect fabric for traveling fashionistas as well since the fabric is wrinkle free. This sculptural fabric can turn simple design details into bold statements and the best part is that it does not need to be lined or hemmed. Embrace the raw edge!
