COMME DES GARÇONS: A Look at Androgynous Fashion Trends

Androgyny has become a prominent style for women, especially in recent years. This look consists of traditional menswear silhouettes that capture the power and sophistication of masculine style with a rebellious edge. From Le Smoking Suit (the first ever tuxedo suit for women, top left) designed by Yves Saint Laurent, to the photoshoot of Cate Blanchette (Top Right), the androgynous look is greatly influenced by musicians, actresses and models seeking to achieve a rebellious and distinguished look.  First seen in the 1930s with female cross-dressing performances on the stage and in the movies, this look has become a staple for iconic editorials and influencers today.

As you can see above, several editorials and ad campaigns often showcase menswear suiting on models posing casually against simple, plain backdrops. These striking and sophisticated images are often captured in stark black and white photography in order to intensify their powerful imagery.

On the runway we see designers updating classic menswear tailoring through the use of a variety of silhouettes ranging from shrunken and cropped to oversized and unstructured. Subtle details including pleating or tapered shapes add a touch of femininity to these masculine looks

With regards to street-style there is a very colourful take on this trend featuring monochromatic looks in fun colours for a playful interpretation. Draped jackets and untucked shirts add a more casual vibe to the look.

The key items for this look are updated classics. Including; panelled button-fronts, elongated blazers and ultra-relaxed trousers. Crisp cottons and refined wools reference classic suiting, while fresh proportions redefine them and make them look new. Here are some beautiful TÉLIO fabrics that fit the bill!
