As far back as I can remember, I used to tell everyone that I was going to work with my father in the family business. I started working summers at TÉLIO when I was 12 years old and have vivid memories of my father teaching me how to measure and cut fabric by hand in our warehouse on St. Denis Street.
This April I had the most unbelievable experience. My dad invited me to join him on a sourcing trip to Asia. This special journey would take place almost 30 years after my dad’s first trip to China with my grandfather. On the 12th of April we set off for 15 days to South Korea and China together. We had never spent so much as 24 hours alone with each other, and here we were, about to spend 360 hours together on the other side of the world. I think we were both surprised at how easy, and incredibly fun it was to spend this special time together.
In 15 days we visited 3 countries, 7 cities, and had 6 FM’s ( google“FM” [foot massage] and you will discover China’s most popular evening outing). We visited ancient pagodas in Hangzhou, saw peddlers pulling carts of greige fabric destined for dying and printing mills, and we walked through the historic streets of Suzhou. We journeyed through local markets, walked along the Bund and Nanjing Lu, and strolled along the Avenue of Stars on the water’s edge of Hong Kong. And we worked a little bit too. I was fascinated to watch the workers and machines steaming away as fabric rolled through in the printing and dying mills.
Every June marks my return to the TÉLIO office. This year is extra exciting as our showroom is filled with fabric samples that my father and I selected together on our trip. From the mills to the sightseeing, the time I spent with my father in Asia will remain vivid in my mind for the rest of my life.
Thank you dad for being a wonderful boss, tour guide, friend and my one and only awesome dad!
I love you always!
“It is a pleasure having Laura working at TÉLIO. As she has completed her teaching degree, she is able to spend her summer helping out in various functions at TÉLIO. We can share some valuable father/daughter time over lunch when our days aren’t too hectic ( a rare occurrence). This year Laura accompanied me on my April sourcing trip to ASIA. I travel to Asia several times a year to find and develop new and exciting fabrics, maintain and build good rapport with our suppliers, and strive to ensure all current production is running smoothly. From Korea to China and Hong Kong, we spent two weeks together on this trip. No fights, no arguments, just a memorable experience for both of us. We were able to allow ourselves some time as tourists as well, exploring ancient water towns, hutongs, and museums including the I.M. Pei designed Suzhou Museum. Splendid architecture and surroundings, housing artifacts dating from 3000 years BC to the 20th century, art and sculpture exhibitions and more.”
From all of us at TÉLIO, we want to wish all the awesome dad’s out there a very Happy Father’s day! Thank you Laura and Andre for sharing your stories with us!
